Build a Home FTP Server with FileZilla

Upload and download files on your home PC from anywhere by turning it into a personal FTP server. With a home FTP server, you can upload and download files on your home hard drive from the office, your friend's house, or to your laptop while you're on the road using any FTP client. Setting up an FTP server may sound like a complicated undertaking only system administrators can handle, but it's actually quite easy and free with open source software FileZilla. You've already heard of FileZilla's FTP client application, but the FileZilla project also offers a server application for Windows. Today we'll build an FTP server on your Windows PC with FileZilla for easy file transfers from any computer.

Note: Back in '05, guest poster Matt Haughey covered how to set up an FTP server using Serv-U FTP—which is a fine commercial application, but its personal edition limits how many users can log into your server. We love our open source software, which is why we're taking a look at FileZilla, which has all the features, with none of the price tag or limits.

Install the FileZilla FTP Server

The FileZilla server installation is a regular Windows "just press Next" wizard, and for most users, the suggested default settings will work. However, let's take a look at its initial settings anyway, since they'll affect how you work with your server. Here's how to get FileZilla going:

• Download the FileZilla server application. Even though the FileZilla FTP client is available for multiple operating systems, the server app is Windows-only (and works for Windows XP, Vista and 2000). Download it and kick off the installation wizard. As of this writing, the latest server version is 0.9.25.
  
• Run the server as a Windows Service. First FileZilla will give you the option of how it should start up: as a Windows service or not, automatically or manually. Windows services are processes that run on your PC which you can manage from the Services management pane. There's more on how to manage that below, but at this point, running FileZilla as a Windows service that runs automatically is the default option. If you want your FTP server on by default, choose "Start as service, started automatically (default)" as shown. Otherwise, choose "Start as service, started manually."

• In this pane you'll also set the port for the admin interface to use. By default it's 14147, and you're most likely safe leaving it at that. If you do change that port number, make a note of what it is—you'll need it to connect to the server later on.

• Set the server administrative interface to launch automatically (or not). On the final installation dialog, choose whether you want the server admin window to launch automatically when the current Windows user logs on, when any user logs on, or if it should be started manually.
  
• Run and connect to the server with the admin interface. As the installation wizard completes, set it to start the server admin interface. This is the window where you'll configure your server and monitor its activity. The first time you run the admin interface, it will ask you for the server's address and port. Since the server is running on your PC—the same one the admin interface is running on—its address is localhost, or 127.0.0.1. The default port is 14147 (or whatever you may have changed it to, as noted above), as shown:

If this is the only FTP server you'll be administering (most likely it is), check off the "Always connect to this server" box to bypass this dialog in the future.

Create Server Users

If all's gone well, your server's up and running—but no one can use it yet, since you haven't given anyone permission. To set up a server user, from the Edit menu choose Users. In the Users dialog on the right hand side, hit the Add button to create a new user and assign a password. Then, on the left side, select "Shared Folders" to set what folders that user will have access to on your server. Here I've created a user named gina and granted read access to the C:\data\ directory.

Notice you can fine-tune file access rights for each user: grant read-only rights (download only), write rights (to upload files), and whether or not the user can delete files or create directories, too.

If you want to grant several users access to your server all with the same rights and directory access, instead of creating each one individually, set up a user group. For example, if you're sharing your MP3 directory with friends, make a user group called "music fans" with access to the correct directory and add users to that group, which automatically gives them those rights. Then, if you move your music directory you only have to edit the group, not each user in it. To manage user groups, from the Edit menu, choose Groups.

Log into the Server

Now that the server's up and running with users, it's time to log in and try uploading and downloading. Using any FTP client (like the FileZilla client or FireFTP for Firefox) enter the server address, user name and password.

• Server address If you're FTP'ing across your home network (like from your upstairs PC to your bedroom PC), you can reach the server by using its internal network address (most likely something like 192.168.xx.xx.) From the command line, type ipconfig to see what that address is. If you want to log into your FTP server over the internet, set up a memorable URL for it and allow connections from outside your network. To do so, check out how to assign a domain name to your home server and how to access your home server behind a router and firewall.
• User name and password This is one of the users you set up in FileZilla's admin interface, not the server admin user name. If friends, family, and co-workers will be logging into your FTP server, give them each a their specific username and password to log in (along with the server address.)

Use your FTP server to fetch files stored at home from anywhere, share files with friends and family, or back up files across your network. (Free backup software SyncBack supports backup over FTP. Here's more on how to use Syncback.)

A word about security: FTP is not a secure protocol; all the file transfers happen in the clear, which makes them ripe for sniffing. FileZilla does support encrypted FTP access, and we recommend using that or a VPN like Hamachi to secure file transfers over the internet. FileZilla's secure FTP server setup is beyond the scope of this article, but you can go into the server admin interface's settings area to configure it.

Starting and Stopping Your Server in Windows Services

Finally, to shut down or restart your FileZilla server running as a Windows service, from Control Panel, Administrative Tools, launch Services. Right-click on the FileZilla FTP Server item on the list to stop it, edit its Properties, or restart it, as shown.

Other home servers you can set up yourself include a home web server with Apache, a home SSH server with Cygwin and a home VNC server to remote control your computer.

Firefox Slow On Your Netbook

I was about to write a post about how Intel’s Atom processor wasn’t quite fast enough to run Firefox 3. It used to be painfully slow on my netbook, until I found this great little trick. Apparently, Firefox grinds to a halt while trying to find ipv6 internet addresses that are unavailable on most networks.

Luckily, the author of Tech Explorer found out about it and wrote a post about how to disable this ‘feature’. It made Firefox about a hundred times more responsive.

Now if only Adobe would bring the Linux version of their Flash Player up to speed… Version ten is a major improvement, but still not being able to watch YouTube video’s fullscreen is a big bummer.

Under Article 160(2) of the Federal Constitution

KUALA LUMPUR: Members of the Malaysian Indian Muslim Youth Movement (Gepima) want to be known as Malays and not Indians. And they do not think this is an outrageous request since the Federal Constitution states that an Indian is a Malay “if he professes the Muslim religion, habitually speaks Malay and conforms to Malay custom”.

These traits are practised by Muslims of Indian origin today, claimed Gepima president Mohamed Kader Ali.

“I am a second generation Malaysian and I can safely say that from wedding rituals to the food we eat and the language we speak, we conform to Malay customs all the way.

“As such, Gepima is appealing to the government to streamline the laws and recognise Muslims born after independence as Malays in their birth certificate.

“We have been facing this problem for the past 50 years.

“We have written several letters to the National Registration Department but it keeps saying that it can’t do anything about this.”

Kader’s son, 24-year-old Syed Osman Mohamed, cited an incident last August when he went to the Registrar of Companies to apply for a business permit. “In the forms that I filled up, I stated Malay as my race and Islam as my religion. But the officer called me up and asked me to change it to Indian, based on how I looked. “He only had my MyKad and it does not state there whether I am Indian or not,” Syed Osman said. “We feel uncomfortable to be known as Indians, because people automatically think we are Hindus when we are actually Muslim.” ____________________________________________________________________

Mahathir menyatakan :

...I wonder what’s more embarassing: The fact that Gepima’s Indian Muslims don’t want to be known as Indian, or the fact that Gepima still stands for Malaysian Indian Muslim Youth Movement.

I think if Gepima really doesn’t want to be known as Indian, then first, don’t refer to yourselves as Indian Muslims. If you’re not proud of your heritage, then don’t wear it on your badge. .."

How to Set up your own Proxy Server

Lot´s of people complain that Web Proxys are not working at their Works / Schools computer because they have been banned by administrators. A way around this would be to setup your very own proxy server that is being hosted a) by a free web hosting service that supports either php or cgi or b) your own website that is being hosted by a web hosting company.

Both methods should work and I will walk you right through the installation process for both scripts and give you tips how to find out what is actually being blocked. Before we start you need to download a copy of phpproxy or cgiproxy depending on what you want and can use. You also could perform a search for free web hosting on google for instance and try to find a web host that supports one of the two languages, a good site that I found while searching for those terms might be freewebspace.net

1. phpproxy

Download phpproxy and unpack it to a local directory on your hard drive. All you need to do know is to upload the script to your webspace and open up the new url to check if its working allright. You might want to rename the file to something different, something that does not contain the word proxy in it to avoid filters that ban everything that has the word “proxy” in it.

You could open up the script and enter your clients ip in there to make sure that only your client will be able to connect or you could add a .htaccess file to the directory forcing everyone who wants to start the script to enter a username and password. Again, use google if you like to find out more information about .htaccess

The php script has some requirements, make sure you read the readme file which is included and check to see if your hoster has those requirements enabled.

2. cgiproxy

Your hoster has to have cgi enabled in order to run this script. Many free hosters do not offer cgi or only some preinstalled scripts. Make sure it is enabled before you start the installation process.

First, download the source and unpack it to a local directory.

Now, open the .cgi file and take a look at the configuration. You can edit lots of settings from within, for example you could configure the script that way that it only allows text to go through the proxy but no images. Everything is explained in detail and all options are explained with comments, browse through the file, edit the options to your liking and save the new file.

After that upload the script to your cgi directory if that is required by your hoster and open the url from your browser. You are now ready to browse the web anonymously, to check if that is really the case load a website like whatismyip.com as the first site and check if the ip matches with the server the script is installed and not your computers ip. If that is the case you´ve done everything right and can surf anonymously. (there are still ways to find out your ip, just in case you are wondering)

3. What is being blocked ?

a) If you can access the proxy from the client they only block domains / ips.
b) If you can´t access the proxy they might be banning filenames that contain proxy as well, try changing the filename.

Abah pergi jumpa kawan-kawan baya Abah. Datang seorang anak muda. Berceramah tentang keindahan syurga dan azab neraka. Selepas dia habis berceramah, Abah angkat tangan dan tanya, “Kau beriya-iya cerita pasal syurga dan neraka ni kenapa? Kau baru balik dari sana, ke?”

Abah tambah, “Bukanlah salah kau nak bercerita pasal agama. Pasal syurga dan neraka. Tapi kau bayangkanlah. Kami ni dah dengar cerita tu beratus-ratus kali sejak kecik lagi. Dah habih pulun dah! Kau tu masih muda. Apalah salahnya kalau kau bagi ceramah tentang hal-hal yang boleh membuatkan manusia berfikir. Sebagai contoh, aplikasi dari Surah Al-Fiil. Bagaimana kita boleh aplikasi dan sesuaikan peristiwa tentera bergajah dan burung-burung Ababil dengan dunia kita hari ni. Janganlah jumud sangat. Islam bukan takat nak cerita syurga neraka aje. Islam tu kan luas. Cerita-cerita zaman dulu yang disampaikan kepada kita, nak buat kita berfikir. Yang penting untuk kita zaman sekarang ni, macam mana kita nak majukan diri, bangsa dan negara. Kalau dari dulu dok bertumpu cerita tang tu aja, tak dak inisiatif nak berfikir lebih dari apa yang disampaikan dan cuba pahamkan maksud di sebalik cerita tu, sampai la fikiran kita tak berkembang!”

Xunlei English - Thunder 5 Translation Pack

I’m not sure how many of you out there actually uses XunLei or Thunder 5 as your download manager. Well, i have to say, it’s not just any download manager. It’s definitely super fast, both for direct leeching and torrent downloading. While i’ve been a loyal user of uTorrent, i do reckon that XunLei can be super fast when downloading torrent files from international sites like Mininova, Isohunt or Demonoid. And of course, XunLei’s portal (powered by Gougou) also provide links to various torrent files (particularly for chinese-related content, music, TV series, movies).

Well, thanks to the efforts by HeHeHunter, he has made available the language pack. Since he has retired from blogging, i’m worried that his hard-edited language pack will be gone, so i took the liberty to post it here again. Of course, all credits goes to him! If you have not have XUNLEI or Thunder 5, please download it from here first.

So click the button below to Download Xunlei 5 English Translation pack. While it is not 100%, you get to use the common features in English and feel free to edit it from time to time and share it.

Below are my personal reviews on XunLei:

• The speed is amazingly fast.
• If you’re downloading a torrent with a list of files, especially full episodes from a TV Series, you’ll notice that XunLei will always make sure it download the files according to the rank or sequence. Meaning you get to watch Episode 1 when Episode 2 is still downloading.
• Always disable UPNP and use the default TCP port (80) to achieve better download speed.
• XunLei is only in Chinese. Despite that, English translation file is available thanks for the effort of HeHehunter. Do visit his site for the file.
• Despite its speed, XunLei only work on public trackers as it functions as a “spoof” HTTP reader. Some private trackers will not allow this for security purposes.
• If you’re downloading from a tracker with ratio limit, XunLei is not recommended as the seeding (uploading) speed can be very slow, hence lower your sharing ratio.
• XunLei can consume a lot of memory when you’re downloading too many files and it doesn’t integrate well with other download manager.

How to install Xunlei Translation Files:

1. 1. Unzip the downloaded file.
2. 2. Copy it to the languages folder.
3. 3. Eg. C:\Program Files\Thunder\Languages
4. 4. Start Thunder/Xunlei
5. 5. Click the third option, ??(V)
6. 6. Language, then click the version of translation that you wish to use.
7. 7. eg. EN_v1.3

Nabi Muhammad SAW dengan Orang Yahudi

*Ali bin Abi Talib r.a berkata :

"Sewaktu Rasullullah S.A.W duduk bersama para sahabat Muhajirin dan Ansar, maka dengan tiba-tibadatanglah satu rombongan orang-orang Yahudi, lalu berkata : ' Ya Muhammad, kami hendak tanya kepada kamu kalimat-kalimat yang telah diberikan oleh Allah kepada Nabi Musa A.S.yang tidak diberikan kecuali kepada para Nabi utusan Allah atau malaikat muqarrab.' Lalu Rasullullah S.A.W. bersabda :

"Silahkan bertanya.' Berkata orang Yahudi : ' Silahkan terangkan kepada kami tentang 5 waktu yang diwajibkan oleh Allah ke atas umatmu."

Sabda Rasullullah S.A.W. : " Sholat Zuhur jika tergelincir matahari, maka bertasbihlah segala sesuatu kepada TuhanNya , Sholat Asar itu ialah saat ketika Nabi Adam A.S. memakan buah Khuldi , Sholat Maghrib itu adalah saat Allah menerima taubat Nabi Adam A.S. , maka setiap mukmin yang sholat Maghrib dengan ikhlas kemudian dia berdoa meminta sesuatu pada Allah maka pasti Allah akan mengkabulkan
permintaannya ."

Sholat Isya' itu ialah sholat yang dikerjakan oleh para Rasul-Rasul sebelumku , Sholat Subuh adalah sebelum terbit matahari , ini karena apabila matahari terbit , terbitnya di antara dua tanduk syaitan dan disitu sujudnya tiap orang kafir.

Setelah orang Yahudi mendengar penjelasan dari Rasullullah S.A.W. maka mereka berkata : ' Memang benar apa yang kamu katakan itu Muhammad, katakanlah kepada kami apakah pahala yang akan di dapati oleh orang yang sholat.'

Rasullullah S.A.W bersabda : " Jagalah waktu-waktu sholat terutama sholat yang pertengahan , Sholat Zuhur , pada saat itu nyalanya neraka Jahanam , orang mukmin yang mengerjakan sholat pada ketika itu akan diharamkan keatasnya uap api neraka Jahanam pada hari Kiamat."

Sabda Rasullullah S.A.W. lagi : " Manakala sholat Asar , adalah saat di mana Nabi Adam A.S. Memakan buah Khuldi. Orang mukmin yang mengerjakan sholat Asar akan diampunkan dosanya seperti bayi yang baru lahir."

Setelah itu Rasullullah S.A.W. membaca ayat yang bermaksud : "Jagalah waktu-waktu sholat terutama sekali sholat yang pertengahan , sholat Maghrib itu adalah saat di mana taubat Nabi Adam A.S. diterima. Seorang mukmin yang ikhlas mengerjakan sholat Maghrib kemudian meminta sesuatu dari Allah maka Allah akan perkenankan.

'Sabda Rasullullah S.A.W. : " Sholat Isya' (atamah). Katakan kubur itu adalah sangat gelap dan begitu juga pada hari Kiamat, maka seorang mukmin yang berjalan dalam malam yang gelap untuk pergi menunaikan sholat Isya' berjamaah , Allah S.W.T. haramkan dari
terkena nyalanya api neraka dan diberinya cahaya untuk menyeberangi titian sirath."

Sabda Rasullullah S.A.W. seterusnya : " Sholat Subuh pula , seorang mukmin yang mengerjakan sholat Subuh selama 40 hari secara berjamaah , diberi oleh Allah S.W.T. dua kebebasan yaitu :
1. Dibebaskan dari api neraka.
2. Dibebaskan dari nifaq.

Setelah orang Yahudi mendengar penjelasan dari Rasullullah S.A.W. maka mereka berkata : ' Memang benarlah apa yang kamu katakan itu wahai Muhammad (S.A.W). Kini katakan pula kepada kami semua kenapakah Allah S.W.T. mewajibkan puasa 30 hari ke atas umatmu ? '

Sabda Rasullullah S.A.W. : " Ketika Nabi Adam memakan buah pohon yang dilarang , lalu makanan itu tersangkut dalam perut Nabi Adam A.S. selama 30 hari. Kemudian Allah S.W.T. mewajibkan ke atas keturunan Adam A.S. berlapar selama 30 hari. Sementara izin makan di waktu malam itu adalah sebagai kurnia Allah S.W.T. kepada makhlukNya."

Kata orang Yahudi : 'Wahai Muhammad, memang benarlah apa yang kamu katakan itu. Kini terangkan kepada kami ganjaran pahala yang diperolehi dari puasa itu '.

Sabda Rasullullah S.A.W. : " Seorang hamba yang berpuasa dalam bulan Ramadhan dengan ikhlas kepada Allah S.W.T. dia akan diberi oleh Allah S.W.T. tujuh perkara :

1. Akan dicairkan daging haram yg tumbuh dari badannya ( daging yang tumbuh dengan makanan yang haram ) .
2. Rahmat Allah senantiasa dekat dengannya.
3. Diberi oleh Allah sebaik-baik amal.
4. Dijauhkan dari merasa lapar dan haus.
5. Diringankan baginya siksa kubur (siksa yang sangat mengerikan).
6. Diberikan cahaya oleh Allah S.W.T. pada hari Kiamat untuk menyeberang titian sirath.
7. Allah S.W.T. akan memberinya kemudian di syurga.

Kata orang Yahudi : ' Benar apa yang kamu katakan itu Muhammad. Katakan kepada kami kelebihanmu antara semua para nabi-nabi '.

Sabda Rasullullah S.A.W. : " Seorang nabi mengunakan doa mustajabnya untuk membinasakan umatnya, tetapi saya tetap menyimpankan doa saya (untuk saya gunakan memberi syafaat pada umat saya di hari kiamat ) '.

Kata orang Yahudi : 'Benar apa yang kamu katakan itu Muhammad, kini kami mengakui dengan ucapan Asyhadu Alla illaha illallah, wa asyhadu anna Muhammada Rasulullah ( kami percaya bahwa tiada Tuhan kecuali Allah dan engkau utusan Allah ) '. " Dan sesungguhnya akan Kami berikan cobaan kepadamu , dengan sedikit ketakutan , kelaparan , kekurangan harta , jiwa dan buah2an. Dan berilah berita gembira kepada orang2 yang sabar." (Al-Baqarah : 155)

Disebutkan di dalam satu riwayat, bahawasanya apabila para makhluk dibangkitkan dari kubur, mereka semuanya berdiri tegak di kubur masing masing selama 44 tahun UMUR AKHIRAT dalam keadaan TIDAK MAKAN dan TIDAK MINUM, TIDAK DUDUK dan TIDAK BERCAKAP.

Bertanya orang kepada Rasulullah S.A.W. : "Bagaimana kita dapat mengenali ORANG-ORANG MUKMIN kelak di hari qiamat ? " Maka jawabnya Rasulullah S.A.W., " Umat dikenal karena WAJAH mereka putih disebabkan oleh WUDHU " .

Bila qiamat datang maka malaikat datang ke kubur orang mukmin sambil membersihkan debu di badan mereka KECUALI pada tempat sujud. Bekas SUJUD tidak dihilangkan. Maka memanggillah dari zat yang memanggil.

Bukanlah debu itu dari debu kubur mereka, akan tetapi debu itu ialah debu KEIMANAN mereka. Oleh itu tinggallah debu itu sehingga mereka melalui titian Siratul Mustaqim dan memasuki alam syurga, sehingga setiap orang melihat para mukmin itu mengetahui bahwa mereka adalah pelayan Ku dan hamba-hambaKu.

Disebutkan oleh hadith Rasulullah saw bahwa sepuluh orang yang mayatnya TIDAK BUSUK dan TIDAK REPUT dan akan bangkit dalam tubuh asal diwaktu mati :

1. Para Nabi
2. Para Ahli Jihad
3. Para Alim Ulama
4. Para Syuhada
5. Para Penghafal Al Quran
6. Imam atau Pemimpin yang Adil
7. Tukang Azan
8. Wanita yang mati kelahiran/beranak
9. Orang mati dibunuh atau dianiaya
10. Orang yang mati di siang hari atau di malam Jumat jika mereka itu
dari kalangan orang yang beriman.

Di dalam satu riwayat yang lain dari Jabir bin Abdullah r.a sabda Rasulullah S.A.W. : Apabila datang hari qiamat dan orang orang yang berada di dalam kubur dibangkitkan maka Allah SWT memberi wahyu kepada Malaikat Ridhwan :

Wahai Ridhwan, sesungguhnya Aku telah mengeluarkan hamba-hamba Ku berpuasa (ahli puasa) dari kubur mereka di dalam keadaan letih dan dahaga. Maka ambillah dan berikan mereka segala makanan yang digoreng dan buah buahan syurga.

Maka Malaikat Ridhwan menyeru, wahai sekalian kawan-kawan dan semua anak-anak yang belum baligh, lalu mereka semua datang dengan membawa dulang dari nur dan berhimpun dekat Malaikat Ridhwan bersama dulang yang penuh dengan buahan dan minuman yang lezat dari syurga dengan sangat banyak melebihi daun-daun kayu di bumi.

Jika Malaikat Ridhwan berjumpa mukmin maka dia memberi makanan itu kepada mereka sambil mengucap sebagaimana yang difirman oleh Allah SWT di dalam Surah Al-Haqqah bermaksud : " Makan dan minumlah dengan sedap disebabkan AMAL yang telah kamu kerjakan pada HARI yang telah lalu itu."

It means that even after I die, you can still see my face and hear my voice and speak to me in your heart.

For as long as you remember me, I am never entirely lost.

When I'm feeling most ghost-like, it is your remembering me that helps remind me that I actually exist.

When I'm feeling sad, it's my consolation. When I'm feeling happy, it's part of why I feel that way.

If you forget me, one of the ways I remember who I am will be gone. If you forget, part of who I am will be gone.
